Ovarian Cancer Treatments

The treatment for any case of ovary cancer is managed by a team of different specialists that form a multi-disciplinary team which also includes physician assistants, oncology nurses, pharmacists, etc.

Ovarian cancer may be treated with a single treatment method or a combination of multiple treatment methods (surgery and chemotherapy) depending on various individual factors such as the stage of the disease and your overall health status, etc.

Your gynecologist or oncologist will discuss with you the best treatment options available for your individual case and advise you of all its advantages and possible disadvantages before deciding on the type of treatment method for you.

These are the most common ovarian cancer treatment methods in use today:

Surgery:

Surgery is one of the most reliable treatment methods for ovary cancer and is performed by a gynecologic oncologist. The surgeon will perform a biopsy to remove lymph nodes, tissue samples and fluid from the abdomen for pathological testing for advanced diagnosis.

The surgical treatment requires removal of the complete cancer as can be seen inside the abdominal cavity by the surgeon during surgery. These are the different surgical techniques adopted by the surgeon to perform a surgery for ovarian cancer:

Salpingo-oophorectomy: This surgical treatment requires removing the ovaries and the fallopian tubes completely. In case both the ovaries as well as the two fallopian tubes are removed it is called as a ‘bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy’. If the patient wishes to retain the ability to become pregnant after surgery and is suffering from early-stage ovarian cancer it may be required to remove only one ovary and one fallopian tube in case the cancer is limited to one ovary. This type of surgery is called as a ‘unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy’.

Hysterectomy: This surgery is aimed at removal of the uterus and the surrounding tissues also, if required. In case only the uterus is removed it is called a ‘partial hysterectomy’ while the removal of the woman’s uterus and cervix are termed as ‘total hysterectomy’.

Lymph Node Dissection: This surgical treatment requires removal of the pelvic lymph nodes and the paraortic area lymph nodes.

Omentectomy: This surgery requires removing the thin layer of tissue covering the stomach and the larger intestine.

Cytoreductive/De-bulking Surgery: This surgery is useful for treatment of end-stage ovarian cancer in women. The aim of this surgery is to remove as much of the tumor from the ovaries and its surrounding organs as possible. It may also require removal of large parts of the organs affected by the cancer. This is done in order to prevent the cancer from spreading (metastasizing) to other surrounding healthy organs.

Chemotherapy:

Ovarian cancer treatments method requires the use of medicinal drugs in order to destroy the cancerous cells in the body. This treatment method uses medicinal drugs that are aimed at stopping the cancer’s growth as well as their reproductive (cloning) capacities. Chemotherapy treatment is given by a gynecological oncologist or a medical oncologist.

Chemotherapy uses drugs administered into the bloodstream to reach cancer cells more affectively. Chemotherapy is given in a scheduled (regimen) method with the treatment lasting from several weeks to a few months. Chemotherapy may require administering a single drug or a combination of drugs, depending on the oncologists’ expertise.

There are two common chemotherapy treatment methods:

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy: This type of chemotherapy aims to reduce the size of the tumor before a surgical treatment can be performed to remove the remaining tumor from the ovaries. This is usually following a biopsy to determine the origin of the tumor. This type of chemotherapy is called as ‘interval surgery’ and is given in 3-4 cycles before deciding on the surgery.

Adjuvant chemotherapy: This chemotherapy technique is a post-surgical treatment for destroying any remnants of the tumor after having being removed using a surgical treatment method.

Radiation Therapy:

This is not an ideal treatment method for ovarian cancer mainly but is considered to be a better option at preventing the ovarian cancer from recurring in the future. This treatment method requires using high-energy blasts of x-rays or other particles to destroy the cancer cells. A radiation oncologist will likely manage the radiation therapy for ovarian cancer.
