  • A longer life
  • Provide access for delivering intra-surgical treatments such as laser surgery or hypertherapy

Treatment for Brain Tumor

The diagnosis of a brain tumor is done by using MRIs or CT scans. There are some treatment options available for treating brain tumors. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery are the surgical options for removing brain tumors. The treatment depends upon certain factors -

  • Location of brain tumor
  • General health and age of a patient
  • Size of brain tumor
  • Grade and type of brain tumor

Proton therapy can be considered as one of the best treatment options for brain tumors. Proton therapy minimizes side effects as compared to traditional radiation therapy and also long term complications can be avoided. Proton therapy uses higher doses of radiation for targeting brain cancer. This also causes less damage to the surrounding tissues. The success rate of this therapy is also very high.
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)

GBM is considered as the most serious and common type of malignant brain tumors, which is also a part of the glamorous tumor. Glioblastoma multiforme majorly develops in the cerebral hemispheres but it can also spread to the spinal cord, brainstem and brain. Its common characteristics include -

  • GBM is less common in children
  • GBM can be composed of certain different types of cell
  • GBM causes are unknown
  • GBM is commonly seen in older individuals and is more common in men than in women
  • GBM can evolve from a lower grade Oligodendroglioma or astrocytoma
  • GBM can also develop directly

Surgery is the only treatment for GBM. The surgery can be combined with radiation therapy or can be followed by radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is used after the completion of the surgery in order to destroy leftover tumor cells and also prevents their reappearance.
Astrocytoma Brain Tumor

Astrocytoma is also a type of brain tumor that begins from the astrocytes (star-shaped cell) which forms a supportive brain tissue. Ependymal and oligodendrocytes cells are the other type of supportive brain cells. Together they are termed as glial cells and forms glial tissue. This tumor is subdivided into four categories such as grade I astrocytoma, grade II astrocytoma, grade III astrocytoma and grade IV astrocytome. One of the usual symptoms of this tumor is the growing pressure within the skull. Major symptoms are mental status changes, headache and vomiting. Other symptoms are obtuseness, drowsiness, personality changes, lethargy and disordered conduct. Gliomas are treated by using radiation therapy.
